Charter in Washington State

 Hi All and Happy Holidays!

I realized today that I had not yet put up pictures about my trip to  San Juan Islands in Washington State, so below I've pasted a bunch with captions. It's not the finest photography, but it supplements the story Whales and Fishes, from our December issue nicely. Enjoy!

View from the eastern shore of Sucia island with Mt. Baker in the background.

The woods are thick on the island and there's a few nice hiking trails.

Looks like some artists were here.

A shot of the shore line and a great blue heron.

My father driving us back to the boat in the strange little tender. (Does it look like a bumper car setup to anyone else?)

The Mainley Ours sitting comfortably on her mooring.

My father's back off again to try and catch some fish before the sun drops.

Unfortunately, this was probably the best shot I got of the whales. Next time, I'm packing a telephoto lense.

Crabbing in a big hobby up here, and a fellow on the public docks in Bellingham, Washington is pulling in his last catch of the season.

Looks like he got a few keepers.

About grant_rafter

Grant Rafter joined the PMY crew in July 2007 after spending the previous 7½ months captaining his 30-foot Allied Seawind ketch from Maine out to Bermuda, down to Martinique, and back up to Florida. He grew up in Maine, the son of accomplished sailors. The New England summers were spent near the water at jobs ranging from scraping paint and rolling varnish, to working with whale watch tours, to crewing on schooners. Grant attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating with a degree in English Literature in 2004. After college he continued to work on boats, crewing on megayachts around the Caribbean, freelancing in Fort Lauderdale, and captaining towboats back in Maine. He currently holds both his 200-ton MCA Yachtmaster and his 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard Master licenses.
